Wilson & Scott
Wilson & Scott is a long established and successful business, whose commitment to innovation and development and strong leadership continues to stand it in good stead. It is terrific to see a local, family business bucking the trend and continuing to thrive in challenging times.
As Stephen appreciates, the business is to an extent a hostage to fortune with some crucial factors like fuel and raw material costs largely outside their control – not to mention the weather which can and does cause very significant disruption to business operations. Taking out contracts at fixed (or capped) prices to purchase fuel and materials into the medium term may be a good option to take some of the volatility out of profits and cash flows. It is harder to see a solution to the challenges posed by the weather!
Stephen rightly focuses on those things he can control, like ensuring a constant focus on providing his customers with quality, service and value for money. It is also clear that despite being a long-established stable business there is a huge focus on innovation in materials, technology and staff.
The forthcoming change of premises brings risks and opportunities. It is important that the company is able to take advantage of the change and make the best possible use of its new and improved location – the inclusion of bedrooms and rest areas again shows that management are thinking and innovating. Equally important though is to ensure the physical transition is as rapid and smooth as possible – simple things like ensuring phone lines and IT infrastructure are up and running from the first moment will help to minimise the inevitable disruption.
