New Newbury offices for James Cowper
Newbury accountants and business advisers James Cowper is expanding and moving to new purpose built offices.
The firm, with 60 members of staff in Newbury, is one of the town’s larger employers and is firmly committed to the Newbury business community. After more than 25 years the firm has outgrown its Grade II Georgian building on Bartholomew Street and is moving to:
Mill House
Overbridge Square
Hambridge Lane
Newbury
Berkshire
RG14 5UX
Tel: 01635 35255

The move will take place over the weekend of the 7th and 8th May, with its new doors opening on 9th May. All telephone numbers and email addresses will remain the same.
Mike Farwell, a partner in the Newbury office said: “The firm has been in its current offices for over 25 years and is now moving to modern, purpose built offices. The firm has grown and continues to go from strength-to-strength. Our Bartholomew Street building has served James Cowper well and this move will enable us to continue to serve our clients effectively and efficiently for the next 25 years.”
The new open-plan offices comprise 8,000sq ft of floor space, four meeting rooms and parking.
Mike adds: “The space is more flexible and better suited to the technology now needed to support a modern office. Two of the meeting rooms in the new office can be opened into a much larger space, which will be ideal for client seminars and workshops and for staff training. These new offices will enable James Cowper to better service our clients, attract and retain the best staff and continue to grow.”
James Cowper has and will continue to play an instrumental part in the Newbury business community. The firm’s recent Budget breakfast (24 March) at the Newbury Racecourse attracted more than 300 people from Newbury and the Thames Valley and is a firm date in the business calendar.
“The way we conduct business with clients has in many ways changed, although face-to-face contact the personal touch remains just as important today as it was 25 years ago” said Mike. “However, the increased use of IT makes it much easier to keep clients of all sizes up-to-date with advice and important changes quickly.”
In 1985, the year the firm moved into its Bartholomew Street offices, James Cowper had just 75 members of staff working from three offices in Newbury, Reading and Wantage, and a turnover of less than £2 million. Today the firm has 150 staff working from six offices – Newbury, Reading, Oxford, Henley, Southampton and London. The firm now has a turnover of £10 million.
In 2010 the firm was shortlisted for a top award in the prestigious annual Accountancy Age magazine awards programme, and named as one of the top 25 accountancy firms for providing advice to high net worth individuals and families by the respected trade magazine Private Client Practitioner. James Cowper is also a member of Kreston International, giving its clients access to one of the world’s largest accountancy and business advisory networks.
